Warriors on the court, Good Samaritians on the road…
Roberto Tijernio just got through a fun packed weekend on the court at the 2011 State Doubles Championships. When he was done getting his medal he left the tournament to head back home to his family. Not even 40 minutes being on the road, all the sudden Roberto’s car started to act up in an unknown fashion and was forced to pull off to the side of the road. After a few quick phone calls, there was some hope in lights of getting Roberto a break. Just so happen to be heading home from their glamorous State Championship celebration, who is coming down the I-10 road??? Damian Zamorano, Charlie Stalder, Jason Churchwood and Jason Conway. These racquetball warriors were very kind to pull over on their way home to perhaps give Roberto’s vehicle a jumpstart so he could get back to his family. Unfortunately, the jump did not give the proper adjustment Roberto’s vehicle needed, but it did show he did have very supportive people in the racquetball community. During the time of possible repair, some good times were exchanged between the racquetballers, like Damian wishes to have that Neon Green jacket Churchwood was wearing during the roadside service. While Jason Churchwood and the gang figured they could not do anymore for Roberto, they decided to leave after Roberto contacted Road Side Service. While the wait for the tow truck to come ranged anywhere from 30 to maybe an hour wait. There was one guy that happen to stay with Roberto until he was safe. That person was Damian Zamorano. Roberto had said the whole time, Damian kept a good attitude and manage to keep the conversation alive. Not only did he wait until Roberto tow truck to arrive but he also managed to give Roberto a lift back home.
These are some of the small things that stand out as to why all of us play the game of racquetball. Some of us care so much about the game because of the people who are involved with the sport. The racquetball world may be a small community but it is also a community with great sportsmanship is not only shown on the court but also off the court.
I hope everyone who reads this article to give a big applause to those who not only comfort Roberto’s safety but also made him feel that we care about everyone who plays the game!!!
