2011 San Diego Open, not so good of weather, but a great time!!!
It was another successful weekend for Kane Waselenchuk as he continues his amazing winning match streak to over 82 matches. In a very exciting thriller of a finals, Kane seemed to be in cruise control in the 5th game up 9-6, however, Rocky had another objective as he battled back to tie it up at 10-10. Kane bear down and came up victorious by winning the San Diego Open 12-10 in the fifth game. The question remains, can anyone stop Kane and his amazing win streak? Stay tuned as the next pro stop continues in Florida (March 10th -1 3th). IRT FLORIDA SPRING BREAK OPEN
Local Arizonians players who battled until Sunday: Michelle and Daniel Key won the Men’s A Doubles event, Danielle Key made it to the Women’s singles semifinals as she battled a very hard fought match with Jackie Paraiso, Jason Conway found a new nemesis in a 17 year old strong young player out of Mexico, Daniel De la Rosa. Jason had a very tough match with him in both the Men’s Pro Qualifiers as well in the Men’s Open Singles semifinals. Jason also teamed up with Anthony Herrera to battle in the Men’s Open Doubles. They also made it to the semifinals only to be knocked out by a former local and state singles and doubles champion, Tony Carson (doubles partner, Charlie Pratt). Bobby Ferreira made it to the finals of the 40+ division only to meet up with the guy who beat him in the finals of this event two years ago, Fabian Parrilla. Fabian is also the international coach for Team Mexico. The coach for Team Mexico came away victorious again, as he was able to take the crown back home as he won in two games (14 and 12). There was an Ed Mandelberg showing at the tournament. Ed who hasn’t been seen at a tournament in months, maybe a year, played in the event. Ed came up being in great shape, possibly a thigh injury, but that didn’t stop Ed from putting on a great performance! He gave everything he had as he battled in the 40+ division. In the Semifinals of the 40+ division, he was to meet Bobby Ferreira. After a long hard battle (2 hours), exchange of serves, aces and sweat. It came down to the tie-breaker. Unfortunate for Ed’s hard work and dedication for this tournament, he wasn’t able to extend his play into the finals as he was taken down in the tie-breaker 11-8. Bur Raby also found himself in the finals of the 50+ division, his opponent and none other his long time opponent on the court, Steve Wattz. Steve is not new to the scene of Bur’s tournament challenge. Bur fought very hard this weekend as he was able to give Steve a run for his money, unfortunately, Bur wasn’t able to come away victorious. David Lorenz and his father managed to what almost seem like an easy victory in the Men’s C Doubles finals, up 10-2 in the finals, almost managed to let the lead and match slip away. Their opponent tied the match up in the tie-breaker 10-10. David stepped up and took the next serve and sided it out. As a good father and son team would do, they managed to put the match away on the very next service. Good Job Father and Son Lorenz!!! Let’s give a big hand to those who battled it out on Sunday!!!
