RPAA State Doubles: 2010 State Champions are crowned!!

2010 State Doubles had a huge turn out!!! For those that showed up to the event, thanks for supporting the event and the sport.  The event wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t for you!

Please check out the Photo Gallery for pictures taken at the event.

We have a new State Open Doubles Champion:  Jeff Bell and Jason Bronson.   What seemed to be a tide of two games.  The first game was purely one-sided as Bell/Bronson won the first game with no hesitation.   The second game was slowly being taken over by Conway/Stalder as they jumped out inching out every point forcing mistakes to both sides, which created setups for them.   Suddenly as the score reached 12-8 in the second game, Jason Bronson twisted his ankle on a wild rally.   A injury timeout was taken, which also spelled doom for the Bell/Bronson team.  As the injury timeout expired, the matched continued.   You can notice the slow limp Bronson had created from the injured leg, but that didn’t stop Jeff from taking over most of the shots for their team.  As Conway/Stalder took advantage of the situation they managed to sneak a couple of points on closing out the second game and forcing a tie-breaker.   Suddenly service was broken and it was Bell/Bronson in the box to serve at 14-8.   Bronson serve was sided out as it was left to Bell to close the gap.  It seemed no matter what serve he served Stalder/Conway didn’t have an answer until 14-13 where his served was sided out.   Unfortunately, Conway/Stalder couldn’t capitalize on the situation and was forced out of the box without gaining a point.  Bronson was again unable to get a point on his serve, so it was left for Bell to give it all he could.   Bell served a massive hard drive serve that didn’t touch the sidewall but to come off hard off the backwall leaving a great setup for Bell to capitalize off of in the front right corner, as Conway tried his best to get there before bouncing twice.   It was tied up 14-14, Bell wound up, giving it all he could into the serve.   What would it be, a high drive serve to catch Charlie off-step?  A Jam which would leave the decision between the two retrievers on who takes the shot? or would it be something we haven’t seen?   Needlesstosay, Jeff went for the ACE serve as the serve went right over the short line and before Stalder could even react to the shot, the ball bounced twice before hitting the sidewall.   Matched was called as Team Conway/Stalder appeal the serve, the line judges had a split decision which left the call on the court stand.   It will probably go down as one of the most controversial matches called in an Open final in Arizona, however, give it up to the 4 great players that gave it all they could and displayed in some of the greatest doubles played not only for the match but for the weekend!!
